The CWU's "Bite Back" campaign received a boost on Wednesday 6th July when a Special Debate took place on Dangerous Dogs in the House of Commons. The well attended debate saw politicians from all parties speak in support of changing out-dated UK laws, many referring directly to CWU "Bite-Back" Campaign and to the danger posed to postal workers by irresponsible dog owners.
COLLEAGUESHARE
After the original interim valuation by Royal Mail, which made the shares virtually worthless, the company invited the Union to a series of meetings for them to provide a detailed analysis of how Colleagueshare was valued.
At the end of this process the Union told Royal Mail that there was no acceptable explanation which altered the fact that just a few weeks before they were due to pay out, Royal Mail had shifted the goalposts by introducing a new Business Plan that made Colleagueshare virtually worthless. CHANGES IN EMPLOYMENT LAW
From 6 April, the default retirement age of 65 will be abolished. Although there are transitional provisions (which mean that there may still be some lawful retirements under the default retirement legislation into April 2012) unless employers have given notice to employees to retire prior to 6th April 2011, any further retirement dismissals will be judged on whether the retirement is objectively justified as a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.
Canadian Union of Postal Workers
Branches and members will know from the CWU website that our colleagues of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are locked in a bitter dispute with the employer, Canada Post. The collective agreement that CUPW had with Canada Post expired on 23 May and the union had been negotiating with the company for many months leading to that date. The company if demanding new employees are paid significantly less than existing employees. Further they want to reduce the terms and conditions of all current employees and impose working methods for new machinery.
